When a wanted war criminal, masquerading as a healer, settles in a small west coast Irish village, the community are in thrall. One woman, Fidelma McBride, falls under his spell and in this searing novel, Edna O'Brien charts the consequence of that fatal attraction. This is a story about love, the artifice of evil and the terrible necessity of accountability in our shattered, damaged world.

Well written and seriously uncomfortable- nightmarish tale of human evil and stupidity

It's a very good book to which I would have given 5 stars but for the quality of the reading. The reader's voice is wonderful but her insistence on imitating various accents or male voices totally spoiled the book. It felt artificial, stilted and sometimes ridiculous. Why not just read the novel and let the listener imagine the sound of the voices? I am sure emotions can be conveyed just by reading in a natural voice without phoney accents.
