“Would you rather love the more, and suffer the more; or love the less, and suffer the less? That is, I think, finally, the only real question.” First love has lifelong consequences, but Paul doesn’t know anything about that at nineteen. At nineteen, he’s proud of the fact his relationship flies in the face of social convention. As he grows older, the demands placed on Paul by love become far greater than he could possibly have foreseen.

En av de bästa böckerna någonsin. När en författare verkligen har något att säga, när man får ta del av någons liv och reflektioner över det med dimensioner man inte tidigare var medveten om. Nobelprisklass.

This novel has a wonderful retrospective heart-breaking narrative (no spoiling), but also a truly heartfelt and sensitive predictive shaping of an upcoming indeed very uncertain future. The novel is circling around a strong unassumingly low-key ascertaining and the authors full awareness of its distorted storyline. There is this 19 year old youngster falling in love with a married woman in her 40s. There are all his naïve blindnessness, chronically in love and neglecting all subtle bad signs unable to be aware what "really" is happening. This is life: you think you remember your memories, but is it the other way around that it is your memories that define you and your self, and it is your memories that is shaping and remembering you? Who's in charge: you or your memories? When told and retold, it's remarkable how this love and life story of sad and hurting memories, and those so sincere and lovingly close-up memories, continuous beautiful updated and painfully restored.

Julian Barnes är en mästare på att skildra relationer! Hans berättelser är genuina och trovärdiga. Och väldigt bra.
