The second instalment of the series, we are introduced to Angela Marchmont in greater detail - and it is a bit of a surprise. The main character is given a rather exaggerated background that doesn’t seem to fit the era or the genre very well. The plot also feels overly convoluted, and generally rather gloomy. Perhaps the author was spooked by the first book’s success?Rather nicely read.

I never guess the murderer in books like this, but here it was kind of obvious right from the beginning. I was waiting for it to be a red herring but… it was exactly the one who looked to most obvious 🫤
